About Honiton
Honiton’s origins can be traced back to prehistoric eras, marked by ancient burials and hill forts that are scattered throughout its countryside. Famously known as a market town, the 13th and 14th century saw the beginnings of a blossoming trade, benefitting from being on the main road from Exeter to London. The market became so popular it attracted farmers, merchants and craftsmen to trade.
Honiton’s success didn’t end there, the town grew in the textile industry and became well-known for the production of its fine ‘Honiton lace’. In the 19th century Honiton’s lace production reached its peak as Queen Victoria selected a Honiton lace wedding veil. This undoubtedly increased worldwide popularity of the handcrafted lace, providing a surge of employment for locals.
Nowadays, lace-making in Honiton is no longer, however, still remains a fundamental and widely embraced part of the town's identity. The town continues lively weekly markets that offer a variety of products, reflecting its heritage.
